How About a #Freebie?

I realized this morning I wasn’t going to do a Wednesday post this week because it’s already Thursday. Doh! That MLK day really screwed with my head. I’ve been wonky all week (more wonky than usual, I should say).

The newsletter signup and freebie are a go, after much agony from Calibre for some reason I still haven’t figured out. So, make my pain worthwhile and use this link to sign up for your free e-copy of “The Ferryman Cometh.”

I won’t spam you, I swear on all that is good and holy. I’ll only send the rare newsletter to let you know when I have something new coming out. Promise. Realistically, I can barely make myself blog, so that should give you an accurate sense of how often I’ll compose newsletters.

Okay, I’ve spent entirely too long in front of a computer today. I’m going to go pour a glass of wine and make some freakin’ meatloaf so kids can tell me it’s yucky in an hour because that’s the kind of day it’s been.

XOXO,

Kimber

What’s Up Wednesday

Hey, all! It occurred to me on Monday that I should come up with a clever little name for one day of the week and blog religiously on that day. What’s Up Wednesday fit the bill, but it was Monday, so damn. Luckily I’m uber-slow and got hung up on a billion other tasks. I blinked and it’s Wednesday!  Like magic, baby!

As an aside, I did a search for What’s Up Wednesday and found this YA author had a weekly hop with the title a few years back. Seems to be defunct, but I’ll give her full credit, especially since she has some swell blog post ideas I’ll probably borrow at some point.

So, what have I been up to? Seems a legit topic to begin. For one, I’ve been working on starting a newsletter and polishing up a short story I plan to dangle in front of your clicking fingers to make you sign up, so get ready for that. It’s the only way to get your hands on my tale, “The Ferryman Cometh,” a dark paranormal erotic MMM, so a tad off my beaten path with that extra M. 😉 I’ll let you know when that’s ready to e-ship, likely by next Wednesday if not sooner.

I’m self-editing “Balancing Act” right this second. I’m about 2/3 done and then I’ll get it to beta readers. It’s a tough edit because I am striving to keep it just under 40,000 words so it doesn’t jump to the next price point with my publisher. At the moment, I have maybe 300 words of wiggle room, so I’m essentially fucked, but still gonna give it my all. The problem is, when I’m writing dialog fast, I often omit the tags and then come in later and add a bit of meat to make it clear who’s speaking. Hopefully I won’t hit any major rough patches in the home stretch that will require, well, more words. 😛

Okay, that’s it for now. Stay tuned for more newsletter info coming shortly, and more general blogging on Wednesday. Heck, maybe I’ll go do some crunches while I’m on my self-improvement kick.

Emma Weylin’s Before the Dawn #paranormal #romance

Today I have fellow Liquid Silver author Emma Weylin stopping over on her release day!

The second book in Emma’s paranormal Secret Blood series, Before the Dawn, is available at LS Books and should be live on all major e-book retailers shortly.

Blurb:

Samantha Moore doesn’t know she’s a werewolf. For years she believed she was a monster until a hot stranger walks into her father’s bar. With the promise of a better life and freedom from a cage, she decides to trust her animal instincts.

Nicodemus Wolcott works for the shape-shifter Tribunal. When he goes to investigate a report of a distressed shifter, he doesn’t expect to find his mate. He can teach his she wolf how to be a werewolf, but his one chance at love could be lost when nothing turns out as it seemed.

Excerpt:

He let her go several hundred feet before he turned his trotting pace into a sprint. He caught up and hooked an arm around her.

She let out a terrified scream. Her fangs sank into his forearm, and he let her go as a reflex. She stumbled into a tree and then crumpled to the ground in a sobbing fit.

“Please go away. He’ll kill you.”

“Shh,” he said in an even timbre while rubbing his sore arm that would be healed by morning. He should not be rock hard while dealing with his terrified mate, but holy hell, she smelled like nirvana. He battled the instinct to shift into the hulking lycan form. Dealing with a sobbing, frightened woman always caused the urge. It would serve to only scare her more. “I’m here to help you. I won’t let Leon hurt you ever again.”

She stayed knotted up against the side of the tree. “Thanks, but I don’t need help. Please just go.”

“Samantha, I know what you are.”

Her whole body stilled before she unfolded herself and turned. She sat on the loam-covered ground with her knees bent and her clawed hands curled in the dirt. “I’m a monster. Please go before I hurt you. I don’t want to, but it just happens.”

He narrowed his eyes on her. Truth, or a lie fed to her by Leon? He crouched down into a catcher’s stance. “I need more information before I can decide if you’re a monster or not. How many people have you killed?”

Her bottom lip quivered. “Five. And Leon killed two people who found out what I am.”

His jaw went tight. Fuck him. His mate was not rogue. This was un-fucking-believable. “Can you tell me what happened?”

She sniffled. “No. I never remember when the change happens. Leon, my father, cleans it up, and then we move.”

She wasn’t lying. He could smell lies, but he didn’t think she had killed anyone. Cases like this were rare but not unheard of. He pulled at his stubble on his chin. “Do you know what you are?”

“A freak.” She wiped her nose with the back of her hand, smearing dirt across her cheek.

“No.” He stood up and took a step back, well aware how large he was compared to her. The Wolcott family had a Kodiak-bear shifter in their line, making them larger than the average wolf. “You’re beautiful.” He took a step closer to her. When she didn’t move, he closed the distance between them and crouched down next to her. “You’re in danger. It’s normal to do what we call a semi-shift when you’re frightened or angry.”

“N-Normal?” Hope filled her Nordic-blue eyes.

“Want to see mine?”

Her hand fisted, and she scowled at him. “This isn’t funny. I’ve hurt people, and I am a freak.”

“You are a werewolf, just like I am. Just like Ozz and just like Aiden Hyde.” He held her gaze while she processed the information.

Her fangs and claws retracted, and she scooted closer to the tree trunk. “Prove it.”

“As you wish.”

“Slave For Love” Cover Reveal

Holy Hot Vampire Spankin’!  The wait was torture, but so worth it.  And maybe I even like a little torture. 🙂

image (1)

This should be out very soon and includes my twisted fairy tale, “Cinderella in Hell.”

Here’s a quick teaser from “Cinderella in Hell” to get you in the mood:

Rella gazed across the expanse, shivering in delightful anticipation.  As the musicians ended their tune, the dancers cleaved like a wanton woman opening her legs to a lover.  At the center, she saw him.

Prince Dominic sat on his throne.  His black hair was pulled back at his nape, and he rested his strong chin on a fist.  Hooded eyes were glazed with obvious disinterest as they poured over the surrounding merriment.  As if pulled by an invisible force, his gaze met hers.

Rella was on fire.  Her fairy had kindled a conflagration within her.  It felt as though the pyre was visible through flesh and bone, boiling her blood, and apparent to the man who possessed the matching spark.  The prince stood, and stepped deliberately down the dais, straight toward her.

“You dare arrive at a royal ball attired thusly?”

His eyes burned into hers, indomitable and hard.  They were the color of pure emeralds, and equally unyielding.

“I mean no offense, Your Majesty.”  She curtsied, and black feathers fluttered around her.  The entire congregation seemed to be similarly ruffled.  Hushed whispers met her ears.  Snippets of speech rang clear in the low rumble.  Who is she?  What impudence!  Unmask her!

“I would know who stands before me.  You challenge the etiquette of my realm.”  The prince’s hands pulled her mask away as he spoke.

“Rella, of House Tremaine, as it pleases Your Highness.”

Please me, indeed.  My subjects never fail to please me, Rella of Tremaine.  He leaned toward her, and lowered his voice.  “Why do you think I stage this travesty of a ball?  All here are eager to please, but so few truly crave the role of submissive.”  His eyes raked her body.  “Do you think I am blind to those that warm my hand and bed out of duty?  Those affairs taste stale from the outset.”

His voice was a dark whisper for only her ears and sharp teeth flashed between his lush lips as he spoke.  A lustful tremor spiked through Rella.

“And yet, you throw my predilections in my face with your garb.  It is a transgression worthy of punishment.”

I’ll let you know when this baby is available!

Tuesday Teaser

That’s right—it’s that time again.  This tease is coming to you from my story “Cinderella in Hell,” which will be in the Ravenous Romance compilation “Slave to Love.”  If you said, “Slave to Love?  That sounds like a vampire BDSM anthology,” you’d be absolutely correct (and a very good guesser!).

If you’re thinking “Cinderella in Hell? That sounds like a Cinderella story,” you’d also be right.  Not so much a good guesser, though.

Anyway, here she blows, my Cinderella vampire BDSM snippet.  Oh, there’s also a Fetish Fairy.  Enjoy! 🙂

—–Excerpt from “Cinderella in Hell” by Kimber Vale—–

Rella waited in her room, door locked, until the sound of the departing carriage faded with the light of day.  She crept to Drizella’s room first.  A draught sent goose bumps prickling down her arms. They added to the delicious sense of foreboding that had accompanied her into the chamber.  She riffled through drawers until she found the objects of her desire.  The butterfly nipple clips gleamed in the moonlight.  Their miniature jaws sparkled like precious stones.  She placed the stolen jewelry on the bed and stripped.  Moisture gathered between her legs as anticipation thrummed through her body.

A cool breeze billowed the sheer curtains at the window.  They reached toward her like ghosts that craved the touch of warm skin.  Rella’s nipples were erect from excitement and from the chilly kiss.  A shiver rippled through her as she pinched each of her stiff peaks with the jaws.  She gave the chain a tug and sucked in her breath when the bite was amplified.

Thursday Thrills

Writing to a prompt–who does that?  Well, I do today.

The lovely Tallulah Rose has orchestrated this flash fiction weekly prompt.  She’s so good.  Between 100 and 1000 words, based on a photo; check it out next time and see if you are inspired to do a little freewriting!

Here is the picture:

After you read mine, see what other offerings are floating around in the ether by clicking the pic above.  I think the photo lends itself to a variety of genres, particularly smut and horror.  And so, I mix and match. 🙂

——-

This is not a brothel.

I guess “brothel” would imply an exchange of payment, and we never took money for our services.  I think the words on the knocker got us more patrons than a gaudy sign flashing the word “sex” over and over ever could have.  And somehow, they all walked through the door expecting to find their most scandalous desires manifested.

They often did.

We tried not to disappoint.  After all, the more they enjoyed themselves, the better they tasted.

I often thought we were like the pear upside-down cake I always made for our staff Yule party.  Before I flipped over the pan, it looked like a straight-forward cake–light and fluffy, enough to satisfy any sweet-tooth.  That’s how the girls and I looked to the men who came sniffing around.

Until the doors locked behind them, and we tossed the dish over and revealed the sticky bottom; then, our blackened brown-sugar side was obvious.  It was still syrupy sweet, almost intolerably cloying, but they never ran for the exits.  They always sampled until the bitter end.

And the knocker continued to crack against our door every night.  The sound always made me salivate.

I love chicken.

————————————–

200 words

That’s really all I can manage. 🙂  I’ll admit, the chicken part was just to get it to a nice, round 200.  I have a hard spot for 200-word stories.  Chicken is actually only okay in my book.
