Midsummer Madness #Flash #Fiction Blog Hop

blog hop midsum
Happy 4th of July! We’ve got a flash fiction blog hop to celebrate, so I’ve tried for a freedom theme today.

It’s a love letter. I even dipped it in tea, not that you can tell with the assholish way I’m posting this. Eh. You may need to zoom in a bit.

20150625_122411

20150625_122653

20150625_122828

*441 words with a dash of artistic-license-stretchery in time period and tone (although I did read some flowery letters from the 20’s-40’s, so it all depends on the author). Anyway, I didn’t want the guy to end up with a lobotomy (in the 30’s the use of electric shock aversion therapy was just getting warmed up, but they didn’t start scooping people’s brains out until the 40’s). Also, jail was probably tougher to break out of than an old-school psychiatric facility. Maybe. I hope so for the sake of these two.

Here’s the easier-to-read version:

—————————-

July 2, 1933

My Dearest R,

I hope this note finds you as well as can be. It’s my greatest fear that our final farewell left you in a state of dejection, as it has me. The slurs aimed at you were beyond any I’d imagined when first we began our friendship. I confess here and now to my fear and weakness. I failed you. I hesitated to stand by your side throughout the accusations and vile threats. I’d hoped my tendencies would remain undiscovered as yours were paraded for the masses to ridicule.

I am the worst Judas.

Oh, R, my darling, I’ve regretted my inaction every moment since. My contrition is small consolation, I’m certain, while you languish in your wretched cell and endure all manner of humiliation. Good God! The experimentation the gossips describe! As if our kind are less than animals; senseless beasts deserving of hellish punishment, and the angelic whole of mankind shouldering the burden to rehabilitate us. I know your family intends to help you, but their aid is misguided.

We are not abominations, and we do not decide whom we love. It is thrust upon us like a dagger, or soaks our skin slowly as a spring mist, but no matter, the choice is never ours. It was not mine, but I’d choose you before a tribunal now, my sweet.

Would that I’d been so brave before.

My only peace is that I remain free to aid in your escape.

Mary, my cousin and constant companion, whom you met briefly, warns that a correspondence is far from prudent at this time, but her sources within the hospital reveal the most alarming conditions therein. I’ll not sit idle another moment while your fate lies in the hands of sadists who would break spirit or spine to keep you from loving another man.

If you still do…

Whatever your present mind, I’ll see you free from torture two days hence. Stay steadfast, my love. Ease their suspicion with lies and speak what is in your heart when you are once more in my arms. If your words crush me, it is all I deserve. If they echo the song my soul sings at the memory of your face, the whisper of your name, I swear my heart will take wing and together we will fly from this place.

You’ll know my sign when the bearer of this note makes contact again.

I will come for you, and together we’ll find freedom, no matter how far we must flee. With your hand in mine, I cannot tire.

And I’ll never again leave your side.

Always,

M

Book Blast “His Womanly Ways” by K. Lynn #giveaway

Today I have author K. Lynn here with her new release, His Womanly Ways. This is such an intriguing blurb!

K. Lynn is giving away a copy, so read on and don’t forget to do the Rafflecopter thing at the end! 🙂

hiswomanlyways1400

Blurb:

Alex is a womanizer. He makes no excuses for it. Yes, he picks up women at the local bar, leaving them with just a memory of a good night and a good lay, but he hasn’t had any complaints yet. That is, until he picks up the wrong woman. Not satisfied to be tossed aside as just another notch in Alex’s bedpost, she curses him, wishing he “knew what it was like for a woman.” And he’s about to find out what she means, embarking on a genderswap journey that he can’t stop.

Alex starts slowly gaining secondary female characteristics. Waking up with his cock gone, replaced by a vagina, was bad enough. Then it gets worse, as his body becomes more like a woman than the man he used to be. Alex tries to hide the changes he’s going through, for fear that someone will discover his secret, but keeping this quite literally “under wraps” might be impossible before the curse runs its course.

With the help of his female best friend, Eve, Alex tries to deal with who he is becoming.  He feels like he’s lost his identity, his mind not matching the body he now has. But Eve sticks by him, and they become closer as Alex’s changes progress. What started out as friendship may become something more before Alex’s journey is over. Perhaps this curse was actually a blessing in disguise.

Excerpt:

“I don’t need you to courier anybody, okay?” he growled. “This is more serious.”

She gave him a raised eyebrow. “I’m not helping you get rid of a body either. That was just a joke. You can’t hold me to anything I say when I’m drunk.”

“Shut up, there’s no dead body,” he said, untying the strings on the front of his sweatpants. “There’s something wrong with me.”

“For fuck’s sake, Alex, I don’t want to see your diseased dick,” Eve said, covering her eyes. “Go to the clinic.”

“I don’t think the clinic can help me with this,” he said, pulling his pants and underwear down and sitting on the edge of the bed in front of her. Alex pushed his legs apart, splaying them so there was no way she could miss the problem when she opened her eyes again.

“Eve, just look,” he urged, looking up at her.

“No!” she said, keeping her eyes fully covered.

“Please, Eve, I’m freaking out here and you’re the only person I knew to call,” his tone was pleading now and he was starting to freak out again. “Just look at me.”

“I told you,” she began as she started taking her hand away from her face, “I don’t want to see…what the hell is that?!” Her eyes widened as she saw him in full glory, her face losing all trace of color as she stumbled back.

“You should know, you’ve got one yourself,” he said with a pasted-on smirk, but his attempt at humor fell flat.

About the author: K. Lynn has been an avid reader and writer since childhood. In her youth, she could most likely be found in the local library, devouring books that covered everything from WWII History to Dr. McCoy’s latest adventures aboard the Enterprise, with some X-Men thrown in for good measure. Once she had read everything that was on the shelves, she turned around and read them again. K. Lynn was also known to create elaborate adventures that more than once made it to the page. Ink-filled papers gave way to overflowing computer memory as the years went on, but the stories never ceased.

While in college, K. Lynn increased her involvement in LGBT issues and writing within the LGBT fiction genre. She has become a long-time fan of the authors that seek to explore the commonality that exists within all sexualities and genders. Most of K. Lynn’s work features LGBT characters, many of whom are in established relationships and show how love perseveres through every trial and tribulation that life holds. She also has a particular interest in seeing transgender characters gain a larger foothold within the LGBT fiction genre, hoping that the market for these works expand in the future.

Author Interview: Marianne Rice

What do you consider your best accomplishment?

I’m an excellent juggler. I work full-time, have three extremely active children, I read constantly, enjoy cooking well-balanced meals and baking fun treats, work out religiously and write at least one book a year. I truly believe that we make time for what’s important. Do I ignore my children some days so I can meet a writing deadline? Oh yeah. But their schedule comes first. I try to make every game and only miss one if there is a scheduling conflict with one of the other kiddos. Probably the most neglected aspect of my life is alone time with my husband. We haven’t been on a date in over a year. And that was a day I called in sick so we could shop for a dishwasher. Right now the kids rule our lives, as it should be. Our time with them is limited so we try to be as involved as possible. In my book, that’s an accomplishment.

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

Don’t. Stop. Ever. You’ve sent out fifteen plus query letters and haven’t heard back from anyone. Or you’ve received rejection after rejection. It sucks. There’s no sugar-coating that feeling in the pit of your stomach when you question your talent and skill as a writer. When you question the hours upon hours you’ve spent glued to your computer crafting your precious baby, and then to receive a generic note saying your book isn’t for them.

That’s okay. Keep writing. Because when, not if, you get published, things happen so fast you won’t have time to read for pleasure or make dinner for your family. And then your readers are going to want more, more, MORE. You’ll need books ready to send to the publisher who recognized your book for its value. And if you have built up the courage and done your research and gone indie, your readers are still going to want more, more, MORE.
So don’t stop writing. Thankfully I took my own advice. I wrote faithfully for eight years and have seven books under my belt. I have three books coming out in a four month time span. And to think, three months ago I received four rejections and one contract.

If you could cast your characters in the Hollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters?falsestart

Chris Hemsworth’s bright blue eyes, bulging biceps and six-pack abs make him the perfect model for Connor McKay, the retired NFL player in False Start. I have a Pinterest board littered with pictures of him *sigh* He is a beautiful man.

Meg Fulton is classy, but reserved—you’ll have to read the book to find out why—when it comes to men. She uses a sharp wardrobe to cover up her insecurities. I picture Teri Hatcher from her Desperate Housewives days. So beautiful and poised, but when she’s angry or bound and determined, watch out!

What is your least favorite part of the publishing process?

As a newbie, I feel like I’m on a constant “Look at me! Buy my book!” campaign. I’m lurking on Facebook and Twitter, following more writers and readers and asking for friends. Self-promotion is weird, especially when no one has read your books yet and you don’t have a following. I’m hoping marketing book two, False Hope, that comes out in April will be a little less…awkward.

Is there a certain type of scene that’s harder for you to write than others?

Definitely the love scenes, although they are getting much easier to write now that I don’t have toddlers climbing all over me. I’m more than halfway through my eighth book and I’m finding my love scenes are becoming more descriptive.

Do you drink?

Religiously. Kidding. Having three kids in the house makes me want to drink, but I limit it to social drinking…and then I make up for my long dry spells. Pinnacle vodka is my weakness. I love to create new drink recipes!

What secret talents do you have?

I wish I had super powers or had x-ray vision (although I don’t need it to visualize Chris Hemsworth naked). But sorry, this is going to be a boring answer. I love to cook and bake and decorate cakes in my “spare time”. I’ve done a few wedding cakes, baby showers and special occasion cakes for others, but I really enjoy baking and decorating for friends and family. There’s nothing like seeing their expressions when I give them my masterpiece. It’s very rewarding.

What were you like as a child?

As the neglected middle child, I took on a lot of responsibility raising my younger twin sisters after my parents got divorced. I acted as their mother (I’m only three and a half years older than them). I’ve always been the responsible one. The planner. The organizer. The peacekeeper. Those qualities in me haven’t changed.

I was, however, extremely shy. I had social anxiety disorder—which my Teenage Princess had at a younger age as well. You’d never know it today. I’ve done multiple presentations for work in front of hundreds of people and love it. I don’t remember any pivotal moment in my life when I changed from being an extreme introvert to a very comfortable extrovert, but here I am!

Do you ever write naked?

Who wants to know? Chris Hemsworth? No, I do not write naked (are there people who do?) but you asked, so you’re getting a TMI answer…I do, however, love to whip off the bra when I get home from my day job and write in my sweatpants and baggy shirt. It’s freeing, you know?

Asks Authors

“We need to talk.”

Startled by the deep growl, Meg Fulton looked up to the towering stack of testosterone filling her office doorway and cursed the butterflies that fluttered in her stomach.

She straightened her posture, ran her hand through her thick hair in an attempt to put all the strays back in place, and then reached for the lapels of the suit coat that wasn’t there. She felt vulnerable in her silk tank top and wished she had an extra layer to shield her from the menacing daggers targeted at her. Putting on the jacket would only make a spectacle of herself. The thin tank would have to do.

“Sure. Have a seat.” She crossed her legs and attempted to smile. Inwardly, Meg groaned. Connor McKay. She’d noticed him on the football field coaching his athletes and had not looked forward to the expected confrontation.

He remained in the doorway, making no move toward the empty seats across from her desk. His blond hair was short, barely longer than the scruff on his face, and as she looked up she saw his eyes—a fierce, fiery blue filled with accusation and something that ranged between confusion and lust.

You Can Bank on It! Guest Post by Liza O’Connor

Book 1 Banner1

Book 1 Prize Banner2

You can bank on it!

The formations of banks in England began in the 17th century (1694) when Parliament created the Bank of England as a source of funding defense spending.

Modern checks or cheques can be traced to Banker Lawrence Child in 1762.  The use of checks quickly brought the need for clearing facilities, security investments and of, course, overdraft protection. By 1893, many of Xavier’s clients pay by check for his services.

Two immigrant families (Rothchild and Barings) formed Merchant banks that catered to international trading. Due to Britain’s world dominance in trading, both families became very wealthy and soared into society.

Lady anne smallThe unfortunate Lady Anne that Vic rescues in The Troublesome Apprentice is a Rothchild, albeit far removed from the source of Rothchild power. It is no doubt why Lord Conrad had Chesterfield make her a prostitute serving an entire club of men. Naturally the other branches of the family would be horrified and cut all ties with her, thus leaving her without their potential protection.

The 19th century brought forth truly National banks with multiple branches in the first half of the century.  Thus, when Vic witnesses a crime committed at a branch office of a bank, you can rest assured they existed and poor Vic wasn’t drunk from her sip of brandy she had taken just before the crime occurred.

In 1866 and 1878, two banks collapsed causing a confidence crisis in banking. As a result, bankers began to take accounting and record keeping very seriously.  Huge bureaucracies formed requiring a board of directors and a great deal of supervision over the accounting clerks.  If Vic had chosen to go into banking as originally planned, given her time at Oxford, she would have probably spent a year as a clerk, learning the process and then moved into a supervisor role.  It would have been a very dull occupation and she would have hated it.  Thank goodness Xavier offered her a job as his secretary with the promise to not to fire her for three months.

I fear I would have been uninspired to write her story if she had gone into banking. Instead, Vic becomes a sleuth and never have I had more fun writing a story than this series.

The Troublesome Apprentice

By Liza O’Connor

Cases to be Resolved:

The Key to Aunt Maddy’s Death

The Missing Husband of Mrs. Wimple

The Disappearing Scarlet Nun

The Clever Butcher’s Wife

The Rescue of Lady Anne

blurb

While investigating the death of a friend and client, Maddy Hamilton, Xavier Thorn (reputed to be the greatest sleuth in England) is greatly impressed with Maddy’s nephew, Victor, and offers him a job as his secretary. Aware of Xavier’s history of firing secretaries, Victor garners a promise that for three months he cannot be fired. Vic then proceeds, in Xavier’s view, to be cheeky and impertinent at every turn. Xavier endures the impudent pup because Victor is most skilled in extracting the truth from clients and intuiting facts with little evidence to assist.

As they solve a string of cases, Xavier discovers a few more important details about his troublesome apprentice, such as her true gender, and the realization that she has awakened his long dormant heart.

An Excerpt

Vic sighed with relief upon sight of the Remington in Xavier’s office. Her science professor at Oxford had declared her handwriting illegible and suggested she learn to type. Instead of taking insult, she’d investigated the myriad of typing machines currently available and settled on the same one Xavier had chosen.

She had just finished retyping the third letter when Xavier’s hands settled on her shoulders and he leaned forward to study her work. He remained bare-chested and in his silk sleeping pants and smelled wonderfully masculine, a mixture of musk and tobacco.

“Did I give you permission to enter my office?” he asked, clearly in a better mood, despite his provoking question.

“Implicitly you did, for you told me to retype the letter and, since you possess the only machine in the office, one can reasonably presume permission to enter the room it resides in order to complete your request.” Vic stopped talking because his hands remained on her shoulders and they caused a stirring within her. When he did not counter-challenge her observation, she continued. “Now, if you will give me the combination to your safe, I will retrieve the checkbook, deposit slips, and money required to complete the other tasks.”

He laughed outright while his hands encircled her neck as if he planned to strangle her. “Not bloody likely.” He loosened his grip, but did not release her. “I understand your need of the checkbook and deposit slips, but would you care to explain your need to pilfer my money?”

“We are out of stamps.”

“Ah…a false assumption. If you had checked my desk drawer, you would have found the necessary stamps.” He returned his hands to her shoulders.

She turned and frowned at him, trying to ignore his naked chest and focus on his sparkling eyes and beautiful hawk nose. “I would have expected you to keep your desk drawer locked.”

“Right you are, and you will not receive a key to that either.”

“Perhaps you could remove the stamps from your drawer and give them to my care, since I have need of them and you do not.”

He retracted his warm hands from her shoulders and a chill settled in their absence. After making a great fuss over opening the drawer, he presented her with stamps, placing them into her hand. “Do not lose them.”

She laughed at him as she rose. “Are you always so obliging in the mornings? I would have thought otherwise.”

“I seem to find myself in better spirits than normal,” he admitted. “No doubt due to your early arrival.”

Writing One Happy Ending at a Time

I don’t know how some people do it. At the moment, I have about 18,000 words written on my latest book. It’s slow going. Kids are home and constantly fighting which interferes with my sexy-writing mojo for some unfathomable reason. I’m not sure how I feel about my story, or maybe my characters, or maybe where I’m going with it sometimes. Then I’ll go back and read some of it, and think, Yeah, I dig this. It’s gonna be good. Keep on keepin’ on.

And then I get another idea that I reeeeaaaaaalllllllllly want to write on.

Shit.

Now, I could double team with something like a short story and a novel because the short would get done fast—a quick casual affair—and I’d be back in the saddle soon enough with my novel none the wiser.

But writing on two or more biggies at the same time? I don’t think I could do it. It seems wrong. Dirty. I’d get confused going back and forth. Start to love one more than the other. Maybe never come home to my original after a while.

So, that’s why, when I wrote out a blurb for a new idea and then jotted down part of a scene on a pad of paper today (yeah, the old-fashioned way because somehow that didn’t seem like cheating on my WIP. Sorta like giving an unfinished hand job to another dude wouldn’t be cheating on your husband. It’s bullshit. I’m not fooling anyone), I got a bit nervous. I’m excited about this new idea. I think I’d probably burn through it because I love the bare bones of plot I’ve outlined, not like my hot and cold relationship with my other project. I want to give the shiny new idea all kinds of hand jobs and tell my old WIP I’ve got a headache and then roll over and start snoring.

I know, I know. After you start digging, scrubbing your characters’ toilets and picking up their dirty socks, the luster wears thin. I know this. Sooner or later the new book idea won’t be so spiffy, once I’m elbow deep in it.

That’s why I can’t just pack up and leave my WIP like some faithless hussy. Whatever happened to good times and bad? I need to put in the effort to make this work. Go to counseling, or maybe to that empty office in church where I like to write gaylicious snoo-snoo. Break through the writer’s block with a big chunk of words and a spit-lubed jerk-off for the old ball and chain.

A few hours ago I changed the name of one of my main characters on my WIP because it was a little similar to the name I’ve picked for a character in the new idea. Some character I just freakin’ met.

I tried to tell myself that the new name is even better for my old boy. Porn starier. Hell, maybe it will be just the spark we need to reinvigorate this relationship.

I’m horrible! Does almost a third of a book mean nothing to me? I’m a cold, calloused cunt, sniffing around every pretty book idea that passes by like an author in heat.

Pretty soon I’ll be coming home from Starbucks with lipstick stains on my hard drive.

Maybe I can give them both equal attention. Maybe I can find a way to spend time with my book husband for part of the week and put up my wicked hot new book boy toy in a sweet little corner of the library and visit for the occasional quickie (which would morph into me forgetting my old book’s anniversary and eventually robbing all of its names and one-liners).

No. I’m not that kind of author. I swear. I’ll be faithful. I’ll get ‘er done like a good girl. Till The End do us part. I can do it. But first…I’ll just…be a minute.

I gotta go do that thing, you know, with the thing… <coughs out something incoherent and runs off to find a sticky note and pen>.

Things that go bump in the night

Do you believe in ghosts? I know I do. The house I grew up in was haunted, and since I have a passion for ancient castles, I’ve visited several that have boasted a ghost or three. I have a shiver down my spine now, just remembering them.

The house I live in now has some strange goings-on too. All of us have caught a glimpse of someone out of the corner of the eye, a tall person walking round a corner. I saw him/her again last week. Hubby was out grocery shopping, son was still in bed. I’d been to his bedroom to wake him, and then came back into the kitchen to make some tea. I saw someone walking into the kitchen and thought it was teen-son, but when I checked, he was still fast asleep.

For Dante, my hero in Craving (Talisman #2), the spirit world is as real as the usual world around him.

Excerpt

“How do you do it, Dante? What’s your story?” asked Katherine.

If I had a pound for every time I’d been asked this, I’d have a fleet of Harley-Davidsons now. I bought myself a minute while I sank into the seat opposite her and took a welcome swig of beer. God, I’d love a cigarette right now. “Do you think it’s some kind of party trick? Like I’ll give you a list of things to do and the spirits just magically appear?”

Her intense gaze caught me by surprise.

This wasn’t just a conversation question.

“I’ve met loads of people who claim they can summon spirits, but you’re the first I’ve seen who’s actually done it.”

I shrugged. Took another slurp of beer. “Maybe it was a group hallucination. I hypnotized you all into thinking you saw an airman.”

“Nu-huh. Tristan has proof on his hard drive.”

Are they a couple? Surely not, otherwise he’d be here. Her amber eyes seemed to glow in the soft reflected light, and something tight inside me relaxed a little. I could get used to civilized behavior if it meant having supper with Kitten again. The silence between us was comfortable, and I felt irrationally annoyed when she tilted her head to one side and resumed her questioning.

“So?”

“You don’t have anything else to eat do you?”

Her brows tugged together. “Would cheesecake help you to talk?”

I laughed. “Okay. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been able to see people, talk to them, when nobody else thought they were there. I don’t know how it happens, or why me instead of the next guy. It just does.” I’m a freak. I took a long drink of the beer, relishing the cool buzz on my tongue, while I waited to see the distaste on her face. “It’s rare to encounter a spirit that everyone can see. We struck lucky tonight. And there’s no guarantee that we’ll get a repeat performance tomorrow. Believe me, it’s out of my control.”

Her lips twitched. She leaned forward and delicately chinked her bottle against mine. “Judging by how tired you looked earlier, you’ve earned your cheesecake.”

About Author

Romance author Sofia Grey spends her days managing projects in the corporate world and her nights hanging out with wolf shifters and alpha males. She devours pretty much anything in the fiction line, but she prefers her romances to be hot, and her heroes to have hidden depths. When writing, she enjoys peeling back the layers to expose her characters’ flaws and always makes them work hard for their happy endings.

Music is interwoven so tightly into my writing that I can’t untangle the two. Either I’m listening to a playlist on my iPod, have music seeping from my laptop speakers, or there’s a song playing in my head – sometimes on auto-repeat.

Delicious Delay by Tara Quan – 99c #SALE!

salebanner_jpeg_final

Hi, Tara! Nice of you to stop by!

Thank you for letting me share my multicultural contemporary romance, Delicious Delay.

No problem–I love a great deal. 😉 What’s the fine print?

The book is currently on sale for a limited time. You can grab it for only 99c from Amazon, B&N, AllRomance, and Decadent.

After my own not-so-delicious delay in the Middle East, I set out to write something funny, sexy, and set entirely in an airport lounge. It’s a quick summer read meant to make your mouth water (from the food…) and your toes curl. I hope I’ve piqued your interest enough to give one of the links below a click. ~Tara Quan

Delicious DelayDelicious-Delay

Stranded in a Middle Eastern airport, Michelle Day finds herself the object of interest for an abrasive, but all-too-sexy stranger—a stranger who tempts her with the forbidden in a land where indecency could get her killed. But how does one say no to such a deliciously, relentless pursuit?

Khalid Al Dehri takes one look at the red-headed spitfire in the business class lounge and knew he’d either been transported to heaven—or hell. Her tart response to his surliness intrigues him beyond all propriety and the longer he spends in her company, the more he can’t deny his forbidden attraction. But will she explore the sensuality between them or will society’s rules keep them apart?

Excerpt:

He grinned. “So I have a proposal.”

She tried to get her breathing under control, without much success. “Why am I sure it’s an indecent one?”

He motioned his head toward the far end of the lounge. Latticed wooden screens gave that particular section more privacy. In an L-shaped room, the tucked-away location prevented a direct line of sight from the dining or reception areas.

He got up and offered her his hand. She hesitated for a long moment before taking it. With faltering footsteps, she followed him. More private or not, limits on how far this could go existed due to them being in an airport lounge. Since her self-control had chosen today to take a vacation, she appreciated the imposed constraint.

He lowered himself onto a plush leather sofa deep inside the cordoned area. With walls on either side and screens strategically angled, the space seemed to have been designed as a spot for people to nap.

On the brink of crossing a dangerous line, she hesitated. “What exactly do you have in mind?”

“I’m just giving you the opportunity to have your way with me,” he offered, his face the picture of innocence.

She hadn’t expected that answer. “I don’t quite follow.”

He kicked one of his legs out and tangled it with hers. She stumbled and instinctively moved her hands forward to brace herself. Her palms flattened over his hard muscled chest when she landed.

She traced the shape of his pectorals. “What do you do all day? Work out?”

He chuckled, the low rumble all male. “I have access to the best personal trainers money can buy. They help keep me honest.”

She shook her head in disbelief as the man preened. “Have you heard of a concept called humility?”

“It’s not one of my virtues,” he admitted. “I’ve never understood the point.”

She sighed. “It’s the polite thing to do.”

He placed his forefinger under her chin and tipped her head up, his expression playful. “So what is a sweet, polite, goody two shoes doing on top of me?”

The Spring Fling Blog Hop #Giveaway

Sepia Shot of a Young Kissing Couple.Happy spring!  Few words are sweeter on my fingertips after the long, hard winter we had. I probably say that every year. They always seem to go on and on, and I know parts of the country have been bent over and slammed harder than the North East, but still…

Adios, winter. Don’t let the Green Man stab you in the back on the way out.

How about a bunch of amazing prizes to celebrate the changing of the season? Hell, yeah, we’ve got ’em!

For my personal giveaway, I’m going to get out my crystal ball and look into the future. April 28, 2014, to be specific. That’s the day my next release, Double Takes, comes out.

That’s also the day I will send an e-copy of said book to a random person who adds it to their Goodreads: Want To Read shelf. That’s right, peeps. Win it before you can buy it! Sweet, right? Click over and add Double Takes, and you are in!  I’ll pick a winner via Random.org on 3/25.

Double Takes-highresSeriously? I could stare at this cover all day. I’d only need a drool rag on occasion.

Blurb:

Ah, the life of a rock star. Everyone thinks it’s nothing but sex, drugs, and rock and roll.

Not for Giovanni Savale.

For the lead singer of Three Deaf Mice, a band that reached its pinnacle in the late nineties, it’s nothing but an ugly divorce with a custody battle, money trouble, and now the nightmare exposure of starring in a reality television show. When his producer decides to cash in on an infamous interview Gio did years ago, and give the self-confessed bisexual rocker an onscreen boyfriend, things really hit the fan. Gio is certain his sexual experimentation back in his drug-abusing days meant nothing—after all he’s been married for nine years, clean and sober for nearly as long, and he has a son. And Gio is not remotely attracted to Kyrie, the funny, flamboyant actor they choose for his love interest. Of course, Lance Garrett, the mysterious and sexy owner of the local antique shop, Double Takes, is a whole different story. The man has Gio planning out a future he never imagined. With the threat of losing all custody of his ten-year-old son, ghosts from the past returning for revenge, and the cameras rolling, can Gio keep his head above water and his heart from getting broken?

****

To celebrate my coming release (that sounds dirty, huh?) here’s a teaser from Double Takes to whet your appetite.

————-

“How much more do you need?” Lance’s face was stone serious.

“For what? You want to rent a sailboat and escape for a week? I got it covered.” He held up the paper to prove it.

“I want you out of this show. What’s left to pay back your advance?”

“Hmmm.” Gio glanced down again, disappointment warring with common sense. “Shit. I guess it’s just the fifty K they advanced me when I signed on for next season. I have maybe half that socked away still. Put a chunk of my initial payment into buying Christine out of the condo, and then Marco’s school … it was spent before I got it…” His voice trailed off as he looked up to see Lance bending over his desk. Good Lord, the man was temptation personified. The sound of paper tearing accompanied Lance standing straight. He turned and handed Gio a check for twenty thousand more than the printout in Gio’s hand.

“Does that work?” Lance took Gio’s fingers and pressed the paper into his palm.

“No. I mean, yeah, it would, but I can’t take your money. It’s only another week or two of filming. A little more tape with Kyrie, and then we break.” Gio paused to think it through. “Although, if I pay back my advance, I should be off the hook for the additional filming since, technically, we were done with this season.” He shook his head. “Maybe we can book a couple local shows, and I can scrape enough together—buy my freedom before work on season two starts. Or see if the bank’ll give me a line of credit on the house.” Not fuckin’ likely without a dime of equity. Gio tried to hand it back.

“Take it.”

This felt wrong. He was always the provider; never took a dollar from anyone unless he’d earned it. “I can’t, Lance.”

Lance stepped toward him and shook his head stiffly, his greenish gaze skewering Gio. “This is not for you. This is me being completely selfish.”

Gio frowned, mesmerized by Lance’s moving mouth despite his reservations.

“I don’t want to be jerking off in front of a computer screen when you’re a few miles down the road—as much fun as it’s been. I don’t want to see you kissing anyone else on my TV. I don’t wanna miss you like I do.” His palms covered Gio’s cheeks. “This isn’t for you. It’s for me.”

Gio hissed in a breath as he reached one hand behind Lance’s head while his other grabbed the guy’s hip and pulled their bodies flush. Their mouths crashed together, warm lips and steel wool cheeks pulling hungrily, grappling for purchase. Gio sucked Lance’s hot tongue into his mouth, groaning as his dick swelled at the familiar taste of his lover while his hand on Lance’s neck crushed their lips closer.

“God.” Lance shuddered as Gio bit a rough trail across his scruffy cheek and down his neck, Gio’s tongue soothing the sting his need couldn’t bridle. He grabbed Lance’s cock through his jeans, fingers reaching possessively under his denim-clad sac.

“Fuck.” Lance’s voice hitched in time with Gio’s rough hands all over his erection. “Do we have time for this?”

Gio pulled his mouth off Lance’s collarbone and glanced at his watch. “Five minutes to fuck you,” he said in a growl. “You want it?”

“Not long enough but I’ll take it.” Lance began to unbutton his pants with one hand as his other opened a drawer behind his desk.

Gio turned, kicked the office door closed, and twisted the lock. He flipped open his fly and released his painfully hard cock as he walked back toward Lance.

With one hand on his desk, Lance reached lubed fingers back to grease his hole. A light trail of flame-kissed fur led the path down to his tight, glistening entrance, and his slick fingertip teased the spot hypnotically. Gio bit his lip as raw animal desire tore through him. He grabbed the rubber on the desk and had it opened and on in a matter of seconds.

“Look out.” Gio’s voice was gruff, demanding, as he pushed a hand down on Lance’s back and aimed his dick with the other. Lance’s palms slapped the surface of the desk and his cheek followed as Gio surged inside.

Cover Reveal Bits & Bytes Print Anthology: Guest Post Allyson Lindt

On December 19, 2013, I released the final book in my Bits & Bytes contemporary romance series, Learning New Tricks. The entire series was a blast to write, and it was bittersweet to leave those characters behind.

But I am giving them all a new chance at a new distribution channel. I’ve decided to compile all four books into a single print anthology, available March 15, 2014. After working with the fabulous talent at EDH Graphics , she’s come up with an amazing cover to encompass all four books.

Learning New Tricks Excerpt

Archer intertwined his fingers with Tori’s and tugged her off the stool. “Come on.” His voice was gentle. “Let’s de-stress.”

She didn’t resist as he pulled her up the stairs to his apartment. She was glad she didn’t mind following him, because she’d used up all her arguments for the day. When they were inside, they both kicked their shoes off out of habit. He locked the door, and then turned her so her back was to him.

His hands rested on her shoulders, thumbs softly kneading her neck. “You were brilliant today.”

She tilted her head forward, moaning at the gentle touch. “I was terrified.”

The massage deepened, and his voice was soothing. “But the important thing is, you did it anyway.”

She leaned into the attention, not sure how to respond. His lips brushed the back of her neck, and she gasped in pleasure and surprise.

“Sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”

“You should have.” She tilted her head to the side to expose more of her neck. She’d turned off the filter which kept her from speaking her mind; part of her wasn’t ready to turn it back on yet. Especially with other parts of her turned on by his touch, and his soft lips. “And you should do it again.”

His tongue glided up her skin until he met her ear, and his teeth nipped at the lobe. His whisper brushed her skin, sending a pleasant chill through her. “Have I ever told you how much I like it when you talk like that?”

Guest Post KayLyn Cooper of “Explosive Combination”

Thank you Kimber for inviting me today and helping me celebrate the debut of Explosive Combination and the launch of my romance writing career.

Thanks for stopping by, KayLyn! It’s great to have you here and congrats on your new release! 🙂 Mind telling us a bit about it?

After thirty years of writing for corporations, which verged on creative writing and pushed that fiction/non-fiction line sometimes, I leaped with joy over the line about two years ago.

I write Romantic Suspense because that’s what I enjoy the most; a good story filled with what I like to call “Run and Gun and LOTS of Fun!”

A very close cousin looked at me when I told her about this book and asked, “Why didn’t you write about cowboys? You know enough about them.”

That’s probably the reason I didn’t.

Weekends of my youth were filled with western horse shows. We’d fill the camper with my parents and all six kids (yes, I have four Alpha brothers and a sister) and a few strays from the neighborhood always managed to wiggle in as well. We’d pull a horse trailer with six to eight horses on board, park everyone in the grassy field next to a show ring and spend the weekend under the blazing sun and field lights at night.

By most accounts, it was every little girl’s dream; horses and cowboys.

By the time I reached seventeen, I’d had enough of both. I traded my mare in for the horsepower found under the hood of muscle cars and my boots for high heels.

I discovered bad boys were everywhere. Thank God! I finally found there were a few good men and some of them drove fast cars. Macho Marine had a Road Runner in those days and it could pass everything on the highway…except a gas station.

After following my Marine across the country and around the world for twenty-three years, he changed his uniform for khaki slacks and button-down shirts. But it was the men and women we met during those years of military service that are the inspiration for the strong women who handle their Alpha males in my books.

In Explosive Combination, ATF Special Agent Harper Tambini is kidnapped by a Colombian drug lord and forced to use her explosives knowledge to kill his competition before she can escape with the help of undercover CIA agent Rafe Silva. As they make their way through the rivers, mountains and jungles, their desire for each other detonates. But Harper reminds Rafe of his murdered fiancée, and the shadow world he wants to leave. Harper learned the hard way that men never stay, so now she doesn’t keep them around long enough to see if the sparks can light a fire that will last forever. In their short time together, can they crystalize a relationship, or will it all blow up?

Excerpt:

Rafe stood on Harper’s balcony and watched her sleep. He’d slipped undetected over the railing from his rooms next door. Christ, the Deputy Director of the CIA was involved. Rafe was now responsible for Harper’s safety and he vowed he’d die before he’d allow anything or anyone to hurt her.

Harper stirred. He crept to the bed and bent to shake her shoulder to awaken her.

She grabbed his arm and flipped him onto the bed face down, arms locked behind his back. She held a steak knife to his throat. His legs splayed, and her knee nudged his crotch.

“Harper,” he choked out in English, “I’m CIA. I’m one of the good guys. Let me up.”

She held her position. “You’re very high ranking in this organization to be CIA. How long have you been under cover?” She kept her face close to his and spoke in undertones.

Good. She wasn’t going to immediately blow his cover. “I started at the top. Narváez and I were college roommates. Now can you get off me?”

His heart beat rapidly for what seemed to take forever. The cold steel at his throat didn’t quiver. He heard her sigh and the pressure of her leg at his crotch ease. She finally removed the knife from his throat and slid off his back.

“I’d hoped someone was inside, but I didn’t think it was you.” She moved quickly away from him and braced herself on her knees, the knife still held in fighting position.

Rafe rolled onto his back and sat up. He rubbed where the blade had pressed, thankful not to feel any blood on his neck. “You’re good. I never saw you steal that from the supper table.” He glanced at the satisfied look on her face.

“Yes, I am good. The hardest part was to find some place under that dress that it wouldn’t imprint. The last thing I wanted was Narváez to strip-search me at the supper table.” She shuddered.

He fluffed a pillow and leaned against the headboard as he stretched out his legs that had gotten a nice little workout in the past two hours. The climb up the mountain wasn’t strenuous, but a gain of a thousand feet over two miles wasn’t a stroll on the beach. It was his crotch, not his burning thighs, that he wanted to rub. But he was too much a Southern gentleman to make such a crude move.
