Review: Prosperity by Alexis Hall

I want to eat Alexis Hall’s brain with a nice Chianti. Admittedly, some of this sentiment is born of jealousy, possibly alcoholism. But mostly it’s respect. Total respect.

For starters, I’m going to boldly state that I rate Alexis Hall’s work on a different scale than other books. In fact, he makes me want to go back to my Goodreads lists and start handing out demerits to other stuff I’ve rated because he sets the bar so fucking high. He makes me want to reread books I thought I enjoyed just so I can throw my Kindle across the room this time around. So, where I rated his follow-up work to ProsperityThere Will Be Phlogiston, a four, that does not mean it is on par with other four-star books. It is hell and gone from other four-star books. Other five-star books, even. Basically, I couldn’t give it the same 5 stars I gave Glitterland, or Sand and Ruin and Gold. Or this. Goddamn, this book right here.

Alexis Hall is a genius and has thoroughly screwed my book-rating system.

Anyway, the book:

Hall pits heaven (Ruben, the ex-preacher) against hell (Milord, the uber-slimy-underground-mob-boss-type-guy), only they’re rather perversely sexually enslaved to each other (wait, could that be love?). And then he gives us the classic hooker with a heart of gold (mebbe) in our narrator, Piccadilly (who Piccadillied his own name–how damn cute is he?). He’s a conniving sewer rat who needs saving, but ends up doing a fair amount of rescuing of others as he risks life and fin on more than one occasion for the crew of the good ship Shadowless. They become the closest thing he’s had to family, and, surprisingly, something worth dying for if need be. Said crew includes the star-crossed lovers mentioned, the addle-brained-yet-cool-as-a-cucumber crackhead navigator, Miss Grey, and then there’s the captain. Oh captain, my captain. For me, Byron Kae was the show-stealer. God, did I want them and Dil to get together for a bit of the whatnot.

Who am I kidding? The world building, Hall’s exquisite voice, every damn character, the delish voyeuristic sex scene, the creeptastic clockwork parts, the space kraken—the whole damn thing was the show-stealer.

And with this, Alexis Hall moves into my top MM author slot. The honor includes such perks as being subjected to cyberstalking and embarrassing fangirling, and having your characters accents bastardized as I read your books aloud to my cat, possibly while he humps his favorite fuzzy pink blanket because he does that a lot. Check and mate. I’m sorry, KJ, but we’ll always have England.

Short Circuit Time by Diane Saxon

Today I have the ever delightful Diane Saxon visiting with a snapshot of her new sci-fi romance, Short Circuit Time.

Take it away, Diane!

Short Circuit Time by Diane Saxon

In the year 2086, Zaphira is alone, the last survivor of biological warfare on Earth. Before he died, her scientist father promised other survivors would come. Nobody has. So when a horribly mangled android shows up claiming to be her father’s assistant, Aiden, who has been sent through time to rescue her, she’s both frightened and astounded.

The last time she’d seen Aiden, she’d been sixteen, head-over-heels in love with him and had literally thrown herself at him, leaving her devastated by his rejection and him running for the hills. The following day, she’d been told of his death.

Eight years later he’s miraculously back, this time asking for her help. Without it, he won’t survive. But can she really put a dead man back together with tweezers?

For Aiden, everything has changed. There are no other humans, no government, and time travel has left his new android body unexpectedly weak and suffering from inexplicable genetic changes in eye and hair color, brought about by his molecular shake-up. Unbelievably, the scientist who sent him is dead, and he must rely on the scientist’s daughter to help him. A woman who he’s not so sure has his best interests at heart.

The last time he’d seen her, Zaphira had been a sixteen year old with a dangerous crush on him and he’d been rocked by the turmoil of his own feelings. Now she’s twenty four and literally holds his survival in her hands. Too bad everything he does and says seems to annoy her.

Trusting her might be his undoing. But he is left with no choice.

For Zaphira, getting used to the transformation of old Aiden to android Aiden requires a large mental leap. But when android Aiden starts to rebuild his human form to a new and improved standard, things start to get tricky.

The Aiden she loved as a little girl was her father’s nerdy assistant. The new Aiden is hot. But are her feelings as strong eight years later or are they simply a cherished memory?

Excerpt

Prologue

She narrowed her eyes and squinted at the skinny geek stumbling backward out of the passenger seat of her father’s car. She’d waited all day for the rumble of the engine of her daddy’s convertible. The old car had a distinct stutter and a sly rev she fantasized was because it had a mind of its own.

She smiled awkwardly, her mouth pulled tight across her braces and she pressed her fingers over her top lip to stop it from catching on the edge, rolling and making her look like a feral cat. Her face ached. They’d tightened the braces again and it hurt so much more this time. The smile dropped from her lips only to ping back up again as the geek caught his shoe on some piece of equipment in the foot well of her daddy’s car. He flipped backward, his gangly arms pin wheeling until he landed on his ass on the floor, minus his shoe.

He whipped his head up and she stepped back from the window hoping he hadn’t heard her girlish giggles. He wouldn’t be impressed. He was so much older and more mature.

Not many would believe he was twelve years her senior. Not with his thick russet hair falling in a boyish flop over his forehead, his fine gold-rimmed glasses perched right on the end of his nose.

Her heart fluttered in her chest as she chanced another peek.

His arms full of equipment, flushed to his hairline, he staggered toward the front door of her home. Adrenaline pumped hot through her veins. She took a few skips toward the hallway, ran back to the window to see her father’s car pulling away from the curbside. Her mother was out. She was the only one there to open the door. She darted back, hesitated, her pulse thrumming in the base of her throat.

A dull thud shuddered the door in its frame and she shot forward, wrenched it open before he did any further damage. His shoulder slid across the oak panel and he shot sideways through the entrance, his skinny limbs racing to keep up with the speed of his body, but to no avail. His foot skidded and down he went. The clatter of laboratory equipment skidding across the wooden floor filled her ears as did his quiet Irish curse.

“Bollocks.”

Stifling another snigger, she crouched to help, casting furtive little glances at him as he came to his knees, straightened his waistcoat and touched his fingers to his bow tie, ensuring it was still there.

“Hi Aiden.”

His deep frown almost made her stutter, but she knew he couldn’t sustain his annoyance. His small nervous cough made her smile.

“Hey.” The sound of his soft, smooth voice made her light-headed and she stopped what she was doing to gaze deep into his eyes.

He pushed his glasses further up his nose and glared at her. Unperturbed, she met his beautiful gaze with a lovesick one of her own.

“Do you need a hand down to the lab?” He dropped his gaze to her mouth. Her speech lisped embarrassingly through her clenched together teeth. She hated her braces, couldn’t wait to have them removed.

“No.”

Not wanting him to go yet, she piled another few items on top of the ones already in his arms and resisted the urge to stroke her fingers along the sleeve of his tweed jacket.

“Can I get you a coffee?”

“Zaphira…” he sighed, “Thank you, but no. I have work your father wants me to complete. I don’t want to be disturbed.”

Her chest ached. Just a little. The same as it always ached when he rejected her offers.

She bent to pick up Paco, her new puppy, snuggled her face into his thick fur and took comfort from his squirming, plump body as she hugged him close and let him lick sweet kisses across her chin.

Aiden paused at the lab door then glanced at her over his shoulder and her heart hitched again. There. It was there, the glint in his eye. The one that told her every time she was about to give up that there was a spark of interest. There was hope.

Excerpt: She’d developed a liking for spanking when she was sixteen. By chance she’d gotten in trouble at the Mind Traveling School for making a travel without permission of the location and was taken to task by the faculty head. He happened to be a very distinguished looking man but sexually deprived like most Dirt Dwellers.

The moment she entered his office he demanded she bend over and slowly remove her underwear. He positioned himself so he could see her exposed pussy. In that moment of brief eye contact between them she felt the power she had over him. She wasn’t the victim, he was, and that changed the experience for her.

To this day she could remember how he squirmed when she separated her legs, bent over, and shifted her weight from side to side making his hungry stare sway with her ass movement. When he demanded she lay across his lap, she purposely raised her skirt so

his hand would meet her flesh. She did it to weaken and torture him further. At first her purpose was to get back at him for punishing her for something so simple. On subsequent times, she did it to get rid of her own sexual frustrations. The day he came looking for her with some made-up charge against her was the day she knew he was at her command. By confession, she decided how many times he’d swat her rump and if she’d let him get an erection or not before she promised to be good.

Because everything was monitored, the faculty head never dared stroke her pussy, but he sure did a lot of touching, bumping and resting of his hand over that area while scolding her.

She ended up getting into trouble a lot, and it was the reason she wasn’t promoted like Fay had been. Unknown to her at the time, to cover his ass the bastard had filed bogus reports of her disobedience so those watching couldn’t charge him with unlawful sexual stimulus.

“Go on. Ask me.” Andonis’ voice drew her back from her memories.

She just didn’t have to guts to say it. They’d think she was mentally sick. After all Andonis already used a soft whip on her breasts and nipples, if she requested more punishing behavior Nikias was sure to think she was a freak. Andonis, well, he was like the faculty head, he was getting off on it just as she was. Her gut told her he was very much like Ortello. Andonis instinctively knew she liked the wild passion of tempestuous sex. Even now, the devilish twinkle of comprehension in his eyes told her he knew she was looking for a strong outlet like a spanking to get her off at the highest level.

Without pushing her to voice it, Andonis handed his brother a knife. “Cut her loose. Cut only the green and blue ropes. Leave the red bindings on her.”

Nikias released her restraints and removed the spreader bar before bringing her over to where Andonis sat in a high-back chair, stroking his cock.

“Put her on her hands and knees, three feet in front of me.”

Nikias placed his hand on her shoulder. She followed his silent commands until she was stationed on all fours with Nikias standing behind her. Her limbs shook with anticipation.

“Does this position excite you?”

Blurb: Misaki “Aki” Itou is a psi—a person with mutated DNA granting him psychic abilities. He’s also a contracted companion—a whore. It may not be the perfect profession, but having a roof over his head, food to eat, and not being subjected to torture is a dream come true. He is the top companion at the Hidden Gem, and it makes him enough money to buy the prettiest, most sparkly shoes he can find.

Shane McNaughton is an Irishman who survived the Third World War and works as a cop. Head of Missing Persons, he’s good at finding people, but after the plague of the Third mutated his DNA, he has a hard time letting anyone see the monster inside. He’s been paying for Aki’s services for two years, both the psi and the sexual kind, but he wants more from the companion.

Shane needs Aki’s ability to see into another person’s past to track down a serial killer murdering the children of rich and powerful men, but the more they work together, the clearer it becomes that they are linked through a darker past than either of them realizes.

Excerpt:

Jack pulled out a file. He took a bag with a thin piece of cloth and glared at it.
“This one may still be alive. Ransom isn’t set to be paid until tomorrow evening.” He glanced down to the money. “If money motivates you, we can get more, but know this is a sixteen-year-old girl missing. We just want to know if she has a chance.”
Aki closed his eyes and sucked in a deep breath, for a moment remembering the one other time he’d done this. The pain had been immediate, a beating gone wrong, a strike to the head not hard enough to kill, but enough to do a lot of damage. He’d lingered, well the man had, but Aki had felt it, suffered for hours while the man slowly bled to death and finally drowned in his own vomit.
One touch would show him it all. The more Aki fought, the more detailed the memories would become. He’d much rather go back downstairs and find a nice old man to jack off for the cash instead of this. Though he’d have to entertain a couple dozen clients to make even half of what was on the table. Then there was the girl. What if she was still alive and he could save her? He hadn’t been much older himself when Bart and Paris found him half-starved and begging for a chance to live or a fast death. Bart had had a brother who’d been psi and taken from them when they were young, never seen again. Sometimes he still looked at Aki with that sorrow in his eyes. But Aki wasn’t his kid brother. He was no one’s kid brother, just an abandoned psi who played the role of whore really well. But where would he be if no one had given him a chance?
He held his hand out for the bag.
“If she’s dead, it will be bad,” Jack pointed out.
“Yeah, well, hand it over before I change my mind.” Aki grabbed the bag from him and carefully opened it. “I’m not contaminating anything by touching this, am I?” Objects didn’t always give him anything, not like people did. He could get everything from touching the shirt or nothing. Aki found that most objects didn’t hold enough life to pass on memories. Good for him, not always good for McNaughton.
“No.” McNaughton left his seat and eased down on the bed beside Aki.
“If you come from watching this, I’m totally charging you twice my normal rate,” Aki told him.
McNaughton laughed. “Deal.”

Sci Spanks 2014 #scifi #BDSM #stories

I’m stoked to have Leigh Ellwood here today talking about a new sci-fi story collection she’s in (along with a slew of other fabulous authors). Sci Spanks has 15 sexy tales for the awesomely low price of 99 cents. It’s a steal!

————

Hello, everybody. Leigh Ellwood here, and I’m thrilled to announce I’m part of a new anthology called Sci Spanks. This is a collection of 15 shorts on a theme – naturally science fiction with spanking. My contribution, “Skin,” came to me as I racked my brains to think of a story. A martini or two later, and it happened.

You may or may not be familiar with my work, but BDSM and kink are not sub-genres I write often. I don’t read much BDSM, just a few authors, and I know writing kink requires research so the stories are accurate and do not misrepresent the Lifestyle. Since this book deals mainly with spanking, though, I felt it was okay for me to participate. The science fiction setting allowed me a bit of creative license as well. I placed my heroine in a precarious situation where a law was accidentally broken, but her captain manages to make it easier by becoming involved in the interplanetary conflict. I don’t want to spoil it for anybody, but Sci Spanks is only 99 cents and a great collection if you enjoy light kink, other worlds, and a variety of pairings.

I invite you to preview Sci Spanks below and to drop me a line on Twitter @LeighEllwood if you have read and enjoyed it. I don’t know if I’ll write more spanking stories after this, but the feedback is good I never say never.

Change of Plans

The video is just because I’m obsessed with it. I love Imogen Heap. This makes me want to read Homestuck Kids and get all crazy with the Yaoi.

❤ ❤ ❤

Anyway, my change of plans is something that’s been percolating for just a few days, but now that I’ve got my teeth in it I won’t likely let go. It’s like cutting my hair or dying it a funky color—I can’t stop thinking about it until it’s done, good idea or bad.

I’ve been writing on my 3rd book in my Shooting Stars series, getting awfully close to the dark moment and subsequent wind-down. Originally, I only planned to write 3 books in this series. Chance and Alex came to me one day, and then Gio stepped in at the end of their book and I knew he was next. Kyrie and Greg’s story was evident to me early on in Gio’s book (Double Takes, coming April 28th from Liquid Silver Books! Yay!). So, that was going to be it. Three books. Kyrie and Greg get their tale told and I wash my hands of this business and move on to sci-fi-y-er pastures. Heck, I even have the opening pages written for my crazy anti-super hero book and I’m salivating to get on that for real.

Thing is, Chance and Alex get a revisit in Double Takes (cue the wedding bells). And Gio and Lance get a little walk-on in book 3, so we get to see that they’re together and madly in love as ever. But what about Greg and Kyrie? When the curtain closes, that’s it? The end?

It’s gonna break my heart.

So, to be sure they are still together and fighting the good fight side by side in the future, I need to write another book (Kyrie is 23, mind you–it’s hard to pull off a believable HEA with a 23 year-old, right? Thank God Greg is sensible). I’m convinced I will be writing a Shooting Stars #4 at some point in the future. I’m also sure it will be another book about Kyrie and Greg, which will be different from the way I’ve done this series so far. Fuck it, I say. I’m dying to know what these guys are doing in a few years.

Only one way to find out. 😉

But some men are just too hot to resist.

A future of fear…

Seven has been running for his life ever since he escaped Sub-Floor. In order to elude those hunting him he can never have a home, never have friends…and love? It’s nothing but a weakness that can be used against him.

Hiding had become a way of life. Until Chase.

Greed, power, and corruption…

Dr. David Stone knows Seven has a secret. Why else would his colleague, Dr. Radcliff, help Seven escape Sub-Floor?

It wasn’t the loss of a defective precog that bothered Stone, it was the fact Radcliff was willing to die to keep Stone from knowing why he did it. Or better yet, how.

Two men, one love, brought together by a series of impossible circumstances and destined by fate for an entangled future.

But maybe fate has nothing to do with it.

Generally speaking, I adored this book. I love me some sci-fi and superhero yarns, so this checked off both boxes nicely. The MCs were likable and good together. The side characters were superb and absolutely my favorite part of the book. There were loads of them, all rich, and 3-D, and different from one another. Well done, Ms. Wilder (THE Joan Wilder?–I keep wanting to do that).

Seven’s crazy at the beginning is endearing and pulls you right in. Loved it. The pacing was fast and the plot action-packed.

The fact that I finished this read is testament to how fun it was. I used to leave no book unfinished. No longer. The rise of tripe out there has made me a love ’em or leave ’em kind of girl. I barely have time to read good books, let alone garbage. So why not the full 5 shooters, you ask? Just a couple little things.

I’d say my least favorite parts of “Seven” were the sex scenes. I know in MM they are par for the course and I’m not saying I don’t like a hot suck-fest as much as the next dirty girl—believe me, I do!— it just seemed they got in the way of a great story at times. Of course, the romance would not be as well-illustrated without them, but for me one or two of them detracted from the perfection of the book.

I was satisfied with the BJ scene at the beginning–totally hot, with this sort of needful abandon of reason that I enjoyed. The second sex scene was fine (yes, Seven had just almost bit it, but that didn’t bother me. One could even argue it was a reaffirmation of life if you wanted to get all deep and philosophical). By the time the third one rolled along I was unfortunately rolling my eyes. I think because Seven saw that Chase was going to die in the future and instead of warning him or coming up with a plan (turns out he only has to change the future to stop it, which has a whole set of ramifications) they end up in a hotel and screw. I don’t know—just didn’t work for me.

My other little niggle was the word “petted” or “pet.” The MCs are constantly petting each other. The first time I saw it I was like, “Oh, that’s a cute little twist on the word stroke.” But by the seventeenth time or so I was thinking, “Just fucking stroke him already!” But that is me. I have a hard time with word repetition, especially if it’s one that caught my eye in the first place. Petted did it.

So, other than these few peccadilloes, I loved this book. It was superbly written and well-edited—not easy to find in the self-published pool, let me tell ya. The plotting was fine-tuned, and the characters all popped, including the villain.

I will absolutely be reading the next book. Bring it on, Ms. Wilder.

I Got Tagged. Hard.

I was tagged to write this blog post by the damn awesome Sofia Grey.

Thanks much, Sofia! You can find her post here.

What are you working on right now?

Well, I’m trying to finish up my second Shooting Stars book, Double Takes.  It’s an MM romance involving a middle-aged, sorta-washed-up rock star and a younger guy. I originally pegged it for 50K words, but I’m there now and still have a sex scene, a climax (not the sex scene kind), and a happy ending (again, not the sex kind) to go. Sigh. I’m thinking 60K at this point.

After that, I have plans for the third in this series, (top-secret title, with a main character who is an actor, not a rocker) but I may take a break to write the futuristic thingy I have keeping me up at night. We’ll see. Book three smacked me upside the head with inspiration while I was in the shower earlier today, so it may win out. It’s gonna be angsty (she said, shaking like an excited terrier)!

How does Double Takes differ from other works in its genre?

It probably doesn’t. 😉 Actually, I think Gio’s book has a pretty original premise, but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. And it takes place in my old stomping ground, Bean Town, so it’s near and dear to my heart. The entire book is told only from Gio’s point of view, which was different for me, but a fun writing workout. I had to make my other MC likable and relatable without ever getting in his head (In his pants? Yes, but not in his head). You can check out the first kiss scene from Double Takes posted here, if you are so inclined. And Chance and Alex from Forever do make an appearance in Gio’s book, for anyone who’s wondering.

Why do you write what you do?

Basically, I write what I like to read. I’m also a crazy rock-metal-concert-going-fan-girl, so the music theme in my current series was a natural. I was always a huge fan of rogues and romance ever since I was a young thing who shouldn’t have been reading such business, and I devoured horror, sci-fi, and adventure my entire reading career. Now, I just mash-up my favorite things and hope for the best. I also firmly believe that love isn’t ruled by anything, including gender, so I will write any damn sexual pairing that beckons my muse.

How does your writing process work?

Does it? I’m not so sure. 🙂 I usually have a flash of idea—a character, an overall plot arc, or even a title—that dictates the whole shebang. Very often a song will spark an idea. I plot via an outline and copious scribbles in a black and white composition notebook. When I feel I have enough to actually seal the deal and not get stuck in a plot rut, I start writing.  And that’s all she wrote.

Now is the time on Sprockets when we dance, I mean tag three other people.

The fickle finger of fate lands on Diane Saxon, Heloise West, and Max Vos.

Slippery When Wet or Too #Sexy for my Blog or The Art of Writing Male/Male Anal

Did you sing that horrible song when you read the title?  A small, malicious part of me hopes so. >:-) Oh! I didn’t mean anything Bon Jovi, although this is a musical entry, I must say. Anyway, allow me to serenade you while we go at it, here.

The Slippery When Wet Blog Hop begins today, and I am ill-prepared. Or maybe too prepared. Anyway, I have a blog post I penned a while back, which seemed too risqué to send to other places as a guest blog, but is just right tonight after realizing I have two hours to get this sweetheart posted. Enter: The Art of Writing Male/Male Anal.

The Art of Writing M/M Anal

This won’t be comprehensive, but how about the basics for virgin author’s everywhere who want to delve into the great “Do Not Enter?” Sometimes it’s not just an exit, ladies and gentleman, but there are a couple of things we’re going to need in order to get this bird off the ground. So wave your magic pen and produce these magical items:

1.         Condom.  This baby gets top billing for most smut peddlers the world over. Publishing houses, generally speaking, are pretty firm on the “No Creampie” rule. That’s not to say you can’t sneak them in once in a while, especially in short stories which are more likely to fall into the erotica without romance or stupid people having risky sex categories (read: one seat closer to the almighty porn throne).  I wrote a short for Shane Allison’s Bad Boy anthology with Cleis Press (which should be out soon, actually) and had a bank robber getting it on with a hostage right after the hold up. Needless to say, there were no condoms available at the hideout in the woods. Obviously plot factors into your safe sex decision.

Also, if your MCs are in a serious, committed relationship, and you’ve laid that on the line—maybe even with a side note on VD testing (archaic term that is so Pretty in Pink it makes me smile–no, wait, I think that was Sixteen Candles)—you can go ahead and get really nasty. But—general rule of thumb—have a rubber in someone’s pocket/drawer/under the seat of their car/in the little booze container around their faithful St. Barnard’s neck.  Whatever. Non-human exceptions exist as well.  Aliens don’t carry AIDS and all you need is a rabies shot to get it on with a wolf shifter.

2.         Lube. This runs alongside the condom. For one, rubbers—even if they say lubricated—are going to make things, shall we say, rougher, than skin on skin. Also, chicks have the built-in lube. That’s right, we can make our own, so in vaginal sex no one gets bent out of shape if a bottle of K-Y isn’t sitting on your fictional dresser. But M/M? The human ass needs a helping hand (full of spit or jelly).  Spit isn’t the best, but it’s always available unless they are trapped in the Sahara, in which case, I doubt they’re feeling too amorous.

3.         A little foreplay. Even if you’ve got the rubber on your big burly top, he’s squirted an entire bottle of love-lotion on his long-stocking, and his pretty boyfriend is face-down-ass-up, it isn’t nice to just stick it in without a little preamble.  Rimming works, but if your guys aren’t so inclined, a gradual finger work-up is really the kinder, gentler thing to do than insta-penetration.

4.         Mention of the prostate.  No, it isn’t a prostrate like your mother-in-law calls it.  That means lying down with your face smashed into a pillow, which may well be the case with your sexy little bottom who happens to be getting his prostate hammered by his bear.  Not necessarily something you MUST mention, but seems to be a huge factor in the pleasure experience for the guy getting fucked.  I don’t know.  I don’t have one myself, and frankly I feel robbed. I’m going to go write my congressman right now.

5.         The grand finale!  I don’t need to tell you how to do this, really. The world is your orgasm oyster.  Have a fire hose showdown if you like.  One thing to remember is that if the guy on bottom gets off first, I hear tell having a big dick in his ass for an extended time after can be uncomfortable.  Again, I can’t verify this personally and I can’t ask my husband.  I also can’t take part in a fire hose showdown.  Robbed again.  Why else do you think I write this stuff?  It’s the closest I can cum, er come, I’m afraid. 😥

This is a Blog Hop!

TRR Blog Hop: Review: An Unauthorized Field Guide to the Hunt

What to say about AUFGTTH by Kari Gregg? For one thing, I love the title. It’s just so big.

I’ll admit, my interest was piqued the moment I saw the cover. Sci-fi male/male with what appeared to be a Hunger Games-esque beat?

I wanted it.

But I couldn’t quite wrap my head around the plot via the blurb. What the hell was going on, exactly? I waited for some reviews to pop up and read those. Still, I didn’t really “get it” based on what others were saying either.

So I bought it.

Admittedly, I think I have a better grasp for the whole hunting/off-world system, but during my read I was still fuzzy on some of the rules of the hunt. What was the purpose, precisely? Some guys wanted to get laid. Some cats wanted to get laid. Some species wanted to improve trade relations with a planet whose inhabitants are either fucking people/aliens or killing them. Or maybe fucking them to death?  Anyway, now that I’m done, I still don’t have all the answers—as in, I couldn’t possibly write a coherent book report on this without some CliffsNotes and a fair amount of smoke for blowing up people’s asses.

That being said, I still liked it.

Unauthorized Field Guide is brutal and dark. There is a fair amount of bloodshed and broken bones—and I thoroughly enjoyed that. I love gritty.

The sex scenes are both hot and cringe-worthy. Biting, scratching, and barbed penises are the order of the day. They gave me pause and wet panties all at once. Fine and dandy.

Some reviews I’ve read stated that the ending wasn’t satisfactory. I was concerned that the book I had pegged for four stars was going to slip as I hit 80%.

No such thing. The ending was action-packed—savage as the rest of the book, with the “bad guy” behind it all being the person no one expected.  There could have been just a smidgen more foreshadowing in that department IMO, but, again, I was a-okay with the grand finale.

Overall, Guide was a fast-paced fuck-fest that tries for a bit of lovey HEA at the end without shoving the rainbow sprinkles down your throat, thankfully.

I liked it, and would recommend to anyone looking for a quick thrill ride that delivers in all the dark and dirty places.

Blurb:

If you love someone, set him free. If he steals something of yours, hunt him down and make him sorry.

Alex Bremen is over Chance Ralan. Ever since his high school boyfriend ditched him nine years ago, Alex has barely thought of Chance at all. Sure, Alex attended a concert or two when his ex’s band, Armageddon Showdown, was in the area, but that was more curiosity than anything else. Who wouldn’t want to see firsthand how his once clean-cut boyfriend transformed into a pierced and tattooed heavy metal god?

But when Chance has the nerve to record a love song Alex wrote for him years ago, Alex crosses the country to confront him. Revenge becomes a dish best served sizzling hot. The two men lock horns, but find the chemistry between them has only intensified with time, and occasionally love needs to do some growing up before it can be done right.

Oh, and don’t forget to check out my “Name that Dog” contest. I need a puppy name ASAP for the furry fellow in my next book in the series. If I pick your suggested name, you’ll get a $20 Amazon gift card, a shout-out in my acknowledgements, and an e-copy of “Double Takes: Shooting Stars Book 2” when it comes out.

Feel free to add your name suggestions in your comments below! 🙂
